Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja
What is Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja?
Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja or Pitru Dosha Nivarana pooja is a Hindu ritual performed to alleviate the negative effects and to honor ancestors of Pitru Dosha, a condition believed to be caused by ancestral issues or unfulfilled obligations. In Hindu tradition, Pitru Dosha occurs when ancestors’ souls are unhappy or restless due to improper rituals or failure to perform ancestral rites, leading to misfortunes or disturbances in the lives of their descendants. The puja is a way to seek forgiveness from the ancestors, cleanse negative karmas, and restore harmony.
The Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja is usually performed during any time as advised by an astrologer, during pitru pakshsa the fortnight dedicated to ancestral rites, or on special thithi day like the death anniversary of ancestors. During the puja, offerings like water, sesame seeds, rice, and pindas (rice balls) are made, and mantras invoking blessings for the ancestors are chanted. The rituals also include Tarpana (water offering) to satisfy the ancestors’ spirits and seek their blessings for the well-being of the family.
Performing this puja is believed to remove obstacles, bring prosperity, improve relationships, and resolve health or financial problems caused by ancestral displeasure. It is an important spiritual practice for cleansing negative energies and ensuring peace and progress in the lives of the living and their descendants. Thila Homam, Moksha Narayana Bali, Tripindi Shraddha all are performed to resolve pitru dosha.

Significance of Performing Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja in Gokarna
Gokarna, located on the western coast of Karnataka, is a revered religious place known for its association with Lord Shiva and its spiritual significance in Hindu traditions. The town is considered one of the seven Muktikshetra (places of liberation) and holds a unique position in the spiritual practices related to ancestors. In Hindu belief, performing significant rituals in sacred locations like Gokarna is believed to multiply their power and effectiveness. Since Gokarna is a place with strong divine energy, particularly related to the concept of liberation (moksha), performing Pitru Dosha Parihara Puja here is thought to offer greater spiritual benefits.
It is believed that the presence of Lord Shiva, along with other deities associated with the town, enhances the purifying effect of the ritual, ensuring the proper release of the souls and the peaceful transition of ancestors into the afterlife. In addition to its spiritual significance, Gokarna is home to several temples, such as the Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The energy of these temples, combined with the belief that Gokarna is blessed by both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, makes it an ideal place for performing rites meant to benefit ancestors and descendants.
