Varshika Shraddha or the annual ritual, also known as the Annual Death Ceremony, is an important Hindu ritual performed on the death anniversary of an individual to honor and remember the deceased. This ceremony is held every year on the same thithi as the person’s passing, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a time to offer gratitude, seek blessings for the departed soul, and perform rituals to ensure the peaceful transition of their soul to the afterlife.
During annual ritual, family members conduct various rituals, including the offering of pinda (rice balls), water, and sesame seeds, which are believed to nourish the souls of the departed. Prayers and mantras are recited to invoke the blessings of the ancestors and to seek their protection and guidance for the living family members. This ceremony is typically conducted by a priest and involves making offerings to both the deceased and other ancestors, thereby creating a connection between the living and the departed.
The primary purpose of this is to ensure that the soul of the deceased remains at peace and is released from any lingering attachments. It is also believed to purify the family’s karmic debts, bringing spiritual merit, well-being, and blessings to the descendants. Normally two priests will be offered lunch. In the same way 16 Masika Shraddha also will be performed during the first year after death.
Gokarna, located on the western coast of Karnataka, is a revered religious place known for its association with Lord Shiva and its spiritual significance in Hindu traditions. The town is considered one of the seven Muktikshetra (places of liberation) and holds a unique position in the spiritual practices related to ancestors. In Hindu belief, performing significant rituals in sacred locations like Gokarna is believed to multiply their power and effectiveness. Since Gokarna is a place with strong divine energy, particularly related to the concept of liberation (moksha), performing Varshika Shraddha here is thought to offer greater spiritual benefits.
It is believed that the presence of Lord Shiva, along with other deities associated with the town, enhances the purifying effect of the ritual, ensuring the proper release of the souls and the peaceful transition of ancestors into the afterlife. In addition to its spiritual significance, Gokarna is home to several temples, such as the Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The energy of these temples, combined with the belief that Gokarna is blessed by both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, makes it an ideal place for performing rites meant to benefit ancestors and descendants.
